Save Face in Cyberspace -- Apologize if You are Late to Retun an Email

Q: I have taken a long time to get back to someone via email, but I am really busy right now, so the person should understand, right?  If I apologize, I feel as though it will take away from my position of power.  What should I do?

A:  It is always polite to quickly apologize for the delay in your response if it has taken you longer than usual to respond to an email.  Do this at the outset of your reply email.  This way, you "own up" to taking your time, whatever the reason.  If it is appropriate, you can briefly state the reason for your delay.
